How is the ending of the story, The Cop and the Anthem, ironic?

In the end, Soapy gets what he originally wanted.... three months at Blackwell's Island. Ironically, after doing everything he could think of to be sent there, he is only arrested after he decides that it isn't what he wants anymore.
