While the story is told from Jack's perspective and he believes everything he sees, the Land of the Lost is a metaphor for imagination in the face of the unknown. Jack's journey into this new land starts when he loses DP. This means that he is only brought into it when he loses his stability and is uncertain how he can regain it without DP by his side. In turn, this land explores all of the possibilities for lost Things and establishes a complex system and villain to justify caring for all Things equally.
