The Boy in the Black Suit

In Chapters One to Five, what is Matt thinking about? How does Matt see the world? Who or what does Matt care about the most? What is weighing matt down? What has Matt "left" behind? What is an item associated with Matt? What is Matt running away from?

In Chapters One through Five, Matt sees the world through a very limited lens. His thoughts are with his mother, her illness, the difficulties, her death. Matt finds himself disconnected from everything in which his mother wasn't a part, and he is unable to depend upon his father.
