What is the importance of San Domingo in the book, The Black Jacobins?

San Domingo is another term for the island of Hispaniola. During colonial times, the island as a whole was often referenced according to its capital, San Domingo. Now the capital of the Dominican Republic, James uses the term “San Domingo” to describe the island.
