What does Iceland represent?

Iceland symbolizes Fiona’s disconnection from her past. Fiona has an indirect connection to the country of Iceland via her mother, who is Icelandic. However, when grant brings a book of Icelandic paintings to Fiona in Meadowlake, Fiona does not appear to even remember that Iceland is a country.
