Green highlights one example of competition, which levels the playing field and returns it to its fun, game-oriented roots in human societies. He says that Super Mario Kart, the popular racing video game, makes him happy precisely because it contains so many elements of chance as well as skill that it makes it possible for nearly anyone to win, no matter the initial advantages. He thus returns his examination of competition to the possibility of its redemption as a good element of society and not a negative one. Competition, where friendly and containing elements of fairness, can be fun, worthwhile, and even inspirational. Competition rooted in respect for the other human, in other words, retains desired aspects while getting rid of toxicity, equitable failure, and even dangerous gendered norms.
