Jim begins to cry when Sellum is holding a knife to his throat, and those tears are symbols of Jim's fear. He knows that Sellum could kill him and that he might do so. When one of those tears splashes onto Sellum's hand, Sellum's demeanor changes and he begins to cry as well. Soon he releases Jim, unharmed.
