Rachel's house is a sprawling mansion in Los Angeles, and Jessie's new home. Although all of Jessie's materialistic needs are met in the house, Jessie finds that it has none of the comfort of her old apartment in Chicago. She leaves her own room sparsely decorated with only a picture of her mother, and notes that the new house seems "tall and shiny-toothed and the effortless winner of everything" in comparison to her old apartment, which was "low-ceilinged and squat and tough" (35). The house also has many wide, exterior-facing windows, which symbolize Jessie's perception of LA; namely, that everyone looks to outsiders' influence and opinions, even when designing their own home.
