Rachel's house is a symbol of the unknown in Jessie's new life in LA. Jessie faces many sudden changes to her lifestyle after her mother's death, and Rachel's house, which is decadent and immaculate compared to her apartment in Chicago, symbolizes not only the financial gap between herself and her new step family but the differences in their overall life experiences as well. Though it is physically her home, Jessie feels none of the warmth of her old apartment in Chicago and instead notes that it is "decorated so as to keep you from overstaying your welcome" (36).
