As soon as Jarrett sees the lake in opening chapter of the novel, he feels the "body of water" bringing him "inner peace" (36). In spite of his anxieties over the upcoming week at camp, "stepping out of the woods" and standing "in front of that lake at camp" immediately changes something inside of him (37). He feels relaxed and calm.
