Martha is portrayed as having her own internal weather systems. This becomes most obvious when she asks the tattoo artist for a map of the Hebrides: “The weather there is generally just cyclones and torrential storms and hurricanes that are unpredictable and devastating, which I assume, makes it hard to live a normal life. It’s how I feel” (264). When asked why she wants to be reminded of this despite her improved outlook, she admits wanting a memorial for all the things she has lost. Martha first mentions weather in the psychiatrist’s office: “Mainly, it’s like weather.
