Who is Betty from Ruth Hall and Other Writings and what is their importance?

Betty is Dr. and Mrs. Hall's cook. She sees herself one of the family, based upon the fact that Dr. and Mrs. Hall share a room with her in the evening (to save the expense of burning an extra lamp). Betty is lazy and often naps when she should be working.
