The Virgen de Guadalupe, commonly referred to as Our Lady of Guadalupe by American Catholics, symbolizes the Cruz’s ties to their Mexican culture. The Catholic faith is very important to many people in Mexico. There is not a statue of Virgen de Guadalupe near to Mari in Vermont, so she places her letter under a statue of Mary. Mary is the same person as the Virgen de Guadalupe, but the latter is the manifestation of Mary that appeared in Mexico and that is especially dear to many people in Mexico. The Catholic faith is still available to Mari in America, but the cultural aspects of the faith differ slightly.
