Significance of Spring

Spring represents a coming of age. Mari writes that it is as if “Nature was celebrating its quinceañera” which is a coming of age celebration for Mexican girls (244). While Mari notices this in nature, the time in their lives also serves as a coming of age for both her and Tyler. Tyler has been learning to sacrifice for others, and as such, he is maturing. Mari has been noticing that Tyler gets uncomfortable talking about certain body parts around the girls, and she reassures her father that she is sleeping in a separate room from Tyler. This demonstrates that she understands the changing dynamics in intersex relationships in adolescence.
