Importance of stars

Stars represent a map that keeps people together. Both Tyler and Mari believe their loved ones are brought to them in the stars. At one point, Mari tells Tyler that the stars ensure that no one is ever truly lost because they can be like a map. This symbolizes her hopes for her mother: that the woman is not dead. The stars were also used to bring slaves to freedom and to bring the wise men to Jesus.
