What character is killed off a third of the way through the film? Why was this surprising from a narrative standpoint?

The character of Marion Crane is killed off. This is surprising because Marion is our protagonist. Hitchcock slyly switches protagonists from Marion to Norman. This gives the narrative a whole new point of view.
