Chapter 8 opens with a to-do list entry that reads, “Think about aliens and rap music (and Dad)." Emily realizes something is wrong the moment Patina gets in the car, though she tries to hide it and continues to insist she is fine. She asks if Maddy needs help with homework but Maddy says Emily already helped her. Patina reveals she is supposed to go to Becca's house the following day after track practice to work on her project. After asking a few questions, including whether an adult will be present, she agrees. Maddy and Patina spend the evening watching “old-school” music videos. Patina feels she needs a lot of questions answered about how to get along at track and school, and how to answer questions about the poem they are studying in English. Mr. Winston has asked if they are “part of the six hundred? Are ye part of the Light Brigade?” She also feels she needs answers in math class. She thinks about eating lunch with Becca and knows she cannot assume the invitation will be issued everyday.

The next day, Becca calls her over again. She is talking about a record scientists sent up in space with the idea that aon a record like that. Someone suggests the smell of an older brother's shoes and someone else suggests a fortune teller advising the aliens to destroy Chester Academy. Patina is surprised when Becca asks her opinion. She thinks it over and says her father “used to make beats” and that she would send one of his recordings and a cupcake recipe. The others pick up that idea and Becca asks if Patina's father still does that. Time slows down for Patina as she struggles to answer. She knows most people assume Tony is her father, and she lets that assumption stand. Becca asks if she is alright. Patina prepares to say her father is dead, but the bell rings.
