Why is the narrator unable to assist the young man who is set on fire in the novel, Open Throat?

When the young man's tent catches on fire, he is set on fire too. The mountain lion attempts to help him by jumping on him and dragging him in the dirt to put the fire out, but he is unable to assist him because the others throw sticks and stones at him to chase him away.
