Why is Onion John viewed as odd in the novel, Onion John?

Onion John is superstitious and odd: he eats raw onions for breakfast, ties rocks in apple trees to "shame" the apples into growing as big and heavy as the rocks, holds a procession to bring rain, and plans to "fumigate" Serenity of its evil spirits.
