The Wishing Tree represents hope. Everyone who comes to the tree is looking for something to improve their lives. Given the number of wishes hanging from its branches, as well as the rules it gives Tanya, every wish comes from personal desire. In Tanya’s case, her wish is used to save Ratty instead of on herself. The Wishing Tree gives her a chance to protect her best friend, and later gives her mother hope that the future can be better despite her recent separation from Tanya’s father. If one is willing to wish for something, they are willing to hope for a better life.
