The chapters, C. V., and What Writing Is, demonstrate King's belief that writing is as serious job in several ways. Primarily, the seriousness of the job is demonstrated by King's work schedule. King worked throughout childhood and adulthood at different jobs to earn money, writing for magazines in high school, and working for a newspaper. As a young adult, with a wife and small children, King worked in a laundry and as a high school English teacher to support his family while writing in his spare time. To be able to continue to write while so much of his work was not published seems to indicate that King believes that he had something to say to his readership and that he was unable to stop trying to reach them.
