How does Caroline describe her husband in the novel, Olivia?

Caroline says, early in the book, "I enjoyed, and later married, an outline and a cliche," and Angelo remains that throughout the story. He is loving and passionate before marriage, dutiful but indifferent within marriage, a doting father, a cheating husband, and the ruler of his home.
