The book's main setting is the Plymouth Plantation, a settlement made by the Puritans in America. The Puritans did not land on Plymouth Rock as it is often written, but rather ventured to Plymouth after being discouraged away from the Hudson. The location was chosen to be convenient for trade and yet far enough away from the Virginia Colony to be able to establish its own government.
