When David arrives at his new home on the reservation, he is in possession of a number of action figures and a plastic crate that he uses to keep all of them in. David loses a figurine of an alien early in the story. The figurine, and the fact that it is an alien, are representative of David's early childhood, which was spent in a more commercial setting and which is out of place on the reservation, and particularly in the presence of a skeptical Frick. At the end of the story, David gives up his toy box in order to help Paige bury her lost child, symbolizing David's surrender of his childhood innocence.
