Clara is the elderly black slave who is owned by the master of Lowell Mason Farms. She cares for David after he is whipped 100 lashes with a cowhide whip the day he comes to the farm. Clara notices that David's back heals much more quickly than it should have. She comes up with a plan to keep others from seeing how quickly he healed. She also had a deep cut on her hand that had not healed.
