Why did Abilene choose to jump off the train as it was arriving in Manifest instead of disembarking with the other passengers in the novel, Moon Over Manifest?

Abilene chose to jump off the train before it pulled into the station because her father, Gideon, taught her that a person should see a town before it has a chance to see her.
