Why has Mari spent most of her life in isolation with her mother in the novel, Moon Chosen?

Mari's mother, Leda, is the Moon Woman. Since no one is allowed to know the location of a Moon Woman's burrow, Mari spends all her time alone in the burrow with her mother.
