The tone of the book is largely academic, but the authors also clearly aim to make the book accessible to the educated layman and fun to read as well. While the text is written in standard essay format with a fair amount of complex language, it is interspersed with other elements designed to add extra interest. There are numerous charts and graphs for more visually oriented readers and also a number of humorous cartoons that illustrate the Howe and Strauss' points spread throughout the book.
