In Chapter Four, March's memories are interrupted by the cries of a woman and child. March rushes into their home to find Union soldiers acting blatantly against orders, ransacking the rooms: smashing mirrors, pocketing jewelry, and overturning their piano. When the soldiers argue that they are simply "raising a little hell," March draws up a formal complaint against them to the colonel.
