Josiah is a sickly young boy with weeping eyes. He meets March at the port near Oak Landing, where he is sent to guide March to his new home. Josiah's presence at the landing dock and his obvious lack of care is the first image readers have of how terribly the slaves have been treated on this plantation, even after they were given their freedom.
