Macduff is important from a literary standpoint because he is MacBeth's foil. Everything that MacBeth isn't, MacDuff is. MacDuff is loyal, courageous, a loving family man, and has an unerring amount of common sense. As far as the story is concerned, MacDuff is the ultimate vehicle that the 'fates' use to deliver MadBeth's destiny and demise.
