One difference in the treatment of the boys and the girls was that the boys were always fed first. The schools in the camp, however, were open to females as well as males, and Martha was allowed to go as long as her chores were done. She had noticed in her time as a refugee that some places had women who had careers. She felt that this would be a good option for herself so she hurried to get through her chores so she could attend the school. The schooling benefited Martha and John because they learned to speak English, and this helped them when they eventually moved to America.
