Judy's nickname, Frances, represents Art and Judy’s close relationship, as well as the theme of 'The Influence of Pop Culture'. Judy explains early on how Stephen named her after Judy Garland but her real name was “Frances Gumm” (34). She explains, “Art sometimes calls me Frances, usually when he’s said or done something stupid and needs my forgiveness . . . Art likes to think he’s the only person who knows the real me” (34).
