Pastor Michael's sermon is a metaphor for Ben's life. The Pastor chants, "You could have left me standing there/With no one, no one to care...Lord you brought me through, now I'm brand new" (193-194). This reflects Ben's life with Marsha. Prior to his marriage, Ben was alone and struggled with schizophrenia in isolation. There was "no one to care" for him. However, once Ben is with Marsha, he lives contentedly without problems from schizophrenia. It is as if Ben is "brand new."
