Robert Dall was a Salomon Brothers partner, when he noticed that the growth trend in home mortgages might actually out-pace savings and loan financing. Dall's executive committee report recommended Gutfreund form a mortgage department in 1978. The mortgage department that Dall envisioned was wildly successful under Ranieri's management, but his typical take-charge style, squeezed him out and Dall left the firm in 1984. Ironically, Ranieri still refers to "Bobby's vision."
