Who is Pieter from Letters from Rifka and what is their importance?

Pieter is a sailor Rifka meets on the boat to the USA; he dies, drowned during one of the storms the ship encounters.

Does anyone here know Diane from study abroad? I am going to call her once I land in Italy. I need her to tuck me in.
