Why did Cassie's father tell her about her great grandfather being white in "let the circle be unbroken"

Papa knows that Cassie is comming of age. Boys will begin looking at her. Papa wants Cassie to know the truth that grandpa’s father, a white man, kept slaves and had relations with some of those slaves. Papa thinks that someday race mixing will be fine, but right now it does not work.
