What is the importance of farms in the short story collection, Land of Big Number?

The farms so many of the characters grew up on symbolize the beauty of new growth and life as well as the power of patience. The characters are often impatient with the speed at which their crops grow until their elders teach them that the crops will grow steadily and flourish at their own rate if dutifully attended.
