Kettles are symbolic of Sue’s Chinese heritage. Since Sue drinks a lot of tea, Nanny sets up kettles around Fang’s house to help Sue feel at home. This gesture is lost on Sue, who sees only absurdity in the large number of kettles instead of Nanny’s attempt at kindness and comfort.
