Why does the author state there is a need to search for the historical Jesus?

The author says there is a need to search for the historical Jesus because he says if you read the four gospels from start to finish it seems to be full of harmony and good intention, however on further in-depth, it is the lack of agreement that strikes the reader. As a result, the author states the need to find a more general and historical truth.
