The 'red room' was the room that her Aunt locked her in to when she stood up for herself against the physcial abuse that John perpetrated against her. The color 'red' in and of itself shows up numerous times in the novel and each time it references back to the red room and the feeling of oppressiveness. Red is a vivid color and brings with it intense emotional resonance. Thus, it can be determined that the author uses red to indicate uncontrolled emotions and repressed emotions.
