Karana says, "It was the girl I was afraid of." Who is the girl? Why is Karana afraid?

The girl is Tutok. She is a young girl, who is an Aleut, and who has come to the island with those in the boats. Karana is initially afraid she will expose her presence to the men who've killed so many members of her village.
