Jake tells Layla that his mother used to love gardening, and that she died when he was 12. He says that his father was a military man, who lived by strict rules, and inculcated a love of strict rules in him. He says that his love of rules does not mean that he follows blindly, but he took a vow to protect the country from enemies foreign and domestic.
