Leo Baeck was a German rabbi, who wrote about God being more than an "idea". Baeck refused many opportunities to flee Nazi Germany, and he was sent to and survived the concentration camps. Einstein wrote a series of aphorisms to celebrate Baeck's seventieth birthday in 1953.
