Malala describes the political climate in Chapter Five. She says Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif alternate control for a decade though each accuses the other of corruption. The military takes control when Malala is about two years old, and soon after, other countries begin boycotting the Pakistanis. Over time, various men serve as deputy commissioner of the Swat Valley and none of them really care about the people. In talking about the political climate, Malala notes that the Swati people “never forget nor forgive.”
