Joe develops a crush on Daisy while they are working in the crop fields during the war. In an attempt to impress Daisy, he stands up in the pickup and yells obscenities at some occupying soldiers. The soldiers shoot him dead. This event leads to Major McEvoy's death and widespread fighting.
