Canbronne is a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, in which he served in the French military. His greatest desire is to see Napoleon released from exile and reinstated on the throne. Having secured the necessary funds, Canbroone hires an American ship and begins the necessary actions to free Napoleon from exile. Hornblower, however, devastates the man when he informs him that Napoleon is dead. In response, Canbronne retuns to France and disappears from the story.
