Isis Watts is an 11-year-old girl living in Eatonville with her widowed father, maternal grandmother, and siblings. She must do chores, like rake the yard and do the dishes, but she shirks these to greet passers-by. Her grandmother dislikes her boyish mannerisms and behaviors, like riding horseback, whistling, and slouching in her chair. Isis finds ways to have fun while she does her chores and has an active imagination. After attempting to shave her grandmother’s chin while she slept, Isis runs out to dance to the band outside, enjoying the attention. Her motivation is to evade her grandmother’s impending punishment. In doing so, she reacts dramatically and childishly, running away and involving strangers in her family’s affairs.
