In Part I, Miss Lucinda Cole's stolen necklace symbolizes crookedness. Throughout the section, Carney tries to convince himself that he will not return to criminal activity in order to save his business and provide for his family. However, at the end of the section, when Pepper sends him the necklace in the mail, Carney starts to reconsider who he is and the approach he will take to his life. Having the necklace in hand allows Carney to see the positive aspects of his morally duplicitous decisions.
