The chocolate treats represent the idea that the mind can be controlled by suggestion. Farris suggests to Gwendy that the chocolate treats that come out of the box will help to curb her appetite. Whether this is really true or not, Gwendy begins eating just as Farris anticipated she would. She eats only meals and asks for no seconds. She also does not crave desserts.
